What Is an Expired Domain? | Buying a Domain Back

Buying an expired domain for SEO comes up often on YouTube and English-language sites, and more and more people are starting blogs with WordPress, Ghost CMS and similar platforms.
✅ What is an expired domain?
A domain whose ownership is lost because the renewal fee was not paid after registration is called a 'nakjang domain', a term used mainly in Korea. In English it is called an 'expired domain', and, as in Korea, there is plenty of discussion about the pros and cons of whether expired domains help SEO.
For a .com domain, you need to check the domain life cycle to confirm that it has fully expired. Once the final deletion stage, pending Delete, ends, the domain is deleted completely and anyone can register it as new.

✅ Why people use expired domains
Even after you build a new website and publish content, organic Google traffic does not follow right away. Google officially says there is no sandbox period, but it is still something you cannot ignore.
An expired domain already has Domain Authority, and Page Authority. That is why people consider buying one, and experts say it does work if you buy the right domain.(For reference, Google denies that it keeps any data from expired domains.)
✅ Things to watch when using an expired domain
If the domain's topic is completely different from the website you plan to build, visitors may not grow. A domain that had many spam backlinks is another thing to watch out for.
In Korea, Gabia offers backorders for expiring domains, and SEO.Domains appears to sell 'expired domains' that are favorable for SEO. (I have not tested it myself, so decide carefully if you are thinking of buying.)
✅ Expired domain repurchase case: tozisin.com
tozisin.com, which had expired and been deleted, was registered again at Namecheap on October 9, 2026. Before registering, a Verisign RDAP lookup returned no registration record, so anyone could register it as new.

The search results showed $10.98 (regular $14.98) along with a [$6.79 WITH NEWCOM679] badge. Entering that coupon in the cart returned the error [This coupon has expired or has already been applied to your account(s)], so it did not apply to this account.

The total was $11.18: Namecheap's 26th birthday sale price of $10.98 plus the $0.20 ICANN fee. The event page advertised up to 79% off registrations, and .com got 27% off the regular price.

I paid with the account balance (Account Funds). When the $4.36 balance is less than the total, you cannot split the payment with a card; you top up at [Profile → Billing → Balance] and start checkout again.

Right after registration, a WHOIS lookup shows a registration date of 2026-10-09 and an expiration date of 2027-10-09. The registrant appears as [Withheld for Privacy], and the domain age starts again from year 0.
